![]() For instance Thomas Nashe wrote in 1599 about a fisherman from Lothingland in the Great Yarmouth area who discovered smoking herring by accident. According to Mark Kurlansky, "Smoked foods almost always carry with them legends about their having been created by accident-usually the peasant hung the food too close to the fire, and then, imagine his surprise the next morning when …". The fish processing factory in the village of Seahouses, Northumberland, is one of the places where the practice of kippering herrings is said to have originatedĪlthough the exact origin of the kipper is unknown, this process of slitting, gutting, and smoke-curing fish is well documented. Buckling is hot-smoked whole bloaters are cold-smoked whole kippers are split and gutted, and then cold-smoked. The process is usually enhanced by cleaning, filleting, butterflying or slicing the food to expose maximum surface area to the drying and preservative agents.Īll three are types of smoked herring. Originally applied to the preservation of surplus fish (particularly those known as "kips," harvested during spawning runs), kippering has come to mean the preservation of any fish, poultry, beef or other meat in like manner. Another theory traces the word kipper to the kip, or small beak, that male salmon develop during the breeding season.Īs a verb, kippering ("to kipper") means to preserve by rubbing with salt or other spices before drying in the open air or in smoke. Similarly, the Middle English kipe denotes a basket used to catch fish. The word has various possible parallels, such as Icelandic kippa which means "to pull, snatch" and the Germanic word kippen which means "to tilt, to incline". ![]() The English philologist and ethnographer Walter William Skeat derives the word from the Old English kippian, to spawn. In the United Kingdom, kippers, along with other preserved smoked or salted fish such as the bloater and buckling, were also once commonly enjoyed as a high tea or supper treat, most popularly with inland and urban working-class populations before World War II. In the United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland and some regions of North America, kippers are most commonly eaten for breakfast.

In the late game, this is what will let you get fragments because unless you get lots of takedowns, or picks, you wont be getting a lot of fragments. The soul fragments are not to be ignored either, if you can hit 2-3 champions with this on some AoE lockdown ability like Cataclysm you'll not only heal a lot, you'll prep your ultimates burst if you didn't already have some fragments. It's also going to deal a lot of damage if it connects, so combining it with allied CC or your own combo will let you deal a lot of damage. (but lets be real, you're totally going to roam halfway down a river to sniper a cannon creep from your ally.) You'll want to use this ability to scout objectives or delay people. Its damage is reduced on creeps too so you can't long range farm with it easily. Plus it's on a spicy long delay meaning you have to follow it up with CC or on blind players. Too bad it has a mana cost that rivals Destiny and an insane cooldown. Its base damage is 100 at level 1, its range is longer than most ultimates, it has a heavy slow when ranked up, it gives vision on champions/an area and it gives swain fragments which heals him and empowers his ultimate. What this skill lets you do is pretty crazy. I max this ability first to lower its CD and increase its damage. Especially because this is your main damage spell and it has innately a really low CD, thus allowing you to skip CDR. Aside from cost efficiency: HP lets you stride closer without fear of death, Mana lets you spam more Qs, AP is AP and on top of all that you get HP for using mana and mana for taking damage (which as a battlemage you will take damage). This is why RoA/GLP are good buys on Swain. Make sure not to spam this though, at rank 5 it has a 2.5s CD and a high 85 mana cost. It also means enemies can't hide behind creeps if you're dueling in melee range because you'll just melt them and still hit them. Even better if you can kill multiple minions with the spell. You then Q through the minion to get some mana back and hit your enemy for some poke damage. Walk up to a low hp minion, or a caster if you're high HP. To harass someone in lane I suggest abusing the fact they're probably melee, or scared of you. ![]() Make sure to kill the creep you're attempting to hit otherwise you're screwed for mana. It also gives Swain back his mana, as it's decently mana gated for teamfights you'll run oom very quickly if you just throw this out randomly. It's also your waveclear ability, by hitting a creep with multiple bolts it's very easy to cause them to die and allow the bolts to pierce, thus allowing another to die etc etc. This means that if you can stay in melee range you'll be pumping out damage that no champion can handle. Most importantly however is that its cooldown drops to a tiny 2.5s. Ludicrous damage if used at point blank, and meh if a target is only struck by 1 or 2 bolts. So make sure to try and get 5 of these by the time you can trigger your ulti's second half! (Again, more in depth below) Think of it like a mini Triumph that fuels your ultimate. ![]() You don't even need to get the takedown to trigger a fragment drop. Same thing whenever an enemy dies nearby. Every time you CC a target (or a target is CCd in front of you) you gain a % of your max HP. This is what lets you have good sustain in lane. It has a long range too, it's not limited by your auto range (but you can't yank several people quickly like Caitlyn's headshot.įlock is what the fragments do for you outside of your ultimate. Imagine an Ivern sliding into your lane, and then you yank them even further away from their tower. This mostly has use for comboing someone but also incredible if your jungler can CC a target. You can only hold 5 of them at one time, and that's important for your ultimate which I'll cover a little further down this section. ![]() It also has the benefit of giving you a Soul Fragment. The first part, Ravenous is like half a Dredge Line that deals mediocre damage but can instantly cause someone to be pulled out of position to their death. ![]() ![]() (Language of New Media – The Principles of New Media) Why I chose this game: The end result shown is equal parts human and machine created. How it relates to New Media:Īccording to Lev Manovich, a new media object is “not something fixed once and for all, but something that can exist in different, potentially infinite versions… Instead of identical copies, a new media object typically gives rise to many different versions. One version of the story says it started as a German phrase, “alle alle auch sind frei ,” which loosely translates to “everyone, everyone is free.” Another side says it was “all ye all ye outs in free,” essentially saying, “it’s safe to come in.” Think hide ‘n’ seek. It was influenced by classic teen films and coming-of-age shows, the developers wanted to create a story-driven game without cutscenes, allowing players to freely roam the environment. Night School is a new independent studio founded by cousins Sean Krankel and Adam Hines, former Disney and Telltale developers respectively. The game was developed by Night School Studio. Oxenfree does not have any “game over” loss conditions the player’s choices and relationships with the characters determine which of several possible endings the player receives. You progress in the game by completing puzzles that are solved by finding the correct frequency on Alex’s handheld radio, which can perform actions such as unlocking doors or communicating with ghosts, or by winding up tape recorders at the correct speed. Certain dialogue options cause a thought bubble with Alex inside it to appear over characters’ heads, suggesting that the player’s choice had an effect on the characters’ relationship Players can select dialogue options at any time during conversations, choosing to wait for other characters to finish, to interrupt, or to remain silent. At the same time, Alex remains free to move around and navigate the game world. Gameplay is built around the “walk and talk” mechanic: instead of dialogue occurring during cutscenes, speech bubbles appear over Alex’s head, giving the player a choice between two or three dialogue options. How you deal with these events, your peers, and the ominous creatures you’ve unleashed is up to the player. But the night takes a horrifying turn when you unwittingly open a ghostly rift spawned from the island’s cryptic past. The festivities are framed by a dangerous sneak to a forbidden beach, celebrating with friends and navigating prickly situations with former friends. You play as Alex, a bright, rebellious teenage girl who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on a decommissioned military island. It’s equal parts coming-of-age tale and supernatural 80’s thriller (but it’s set in present day). In a home, a space has to be 2.5 feet wide to fit a toilet. For better accessibility, increase the width to 3 feet. In fact, most codes only require 2.5 feet square, but that can feel rather tight. Some freestanding tub styles can shave a couple more inches off the length.Ī comfortable shower area is 3.5 feet square. For smaller spaces, you can buy tubs as short as 48 inches, which is four feet. Regarding width, available options are as narrow as 27 to 28 inches wide. On the other hand, if you have a very challenging narrow bathroom, space-saving fixtures and custom elements will be the best route.Ī standard tub is 2’-6” by 5’-0”. When planning a bathroom remodel, it’s essential to know how much space each element needs, in general. However, when the bathroom is narrow, in most cases you have no other option than to go long. There are plenty of variations on this trio, in particular for a master bath. The sink, the toilet and the bathtub or shower are in straight succession. This means that the three main fixtures line up in a row. Many narrow bathroom layouts have a “three-in-a-row” linear design arrangement. You must have enough storage for your personal care necessities, a place to hang towels and decent lighting. The bathroom is an essential space and maximizing its functionality is critical. Narrow small bathroom layout ideas are valuable whether you live in a tiny urban apartment or a small country cottage. ![]() But people eat some types of land snails, especially in France. Conch shells, like all seashells, are created by secretions from the mantle of the snail that lives inside. Gardeners consider snails and slugs to be pests. Snails and slugs are eaten by snakes, toads, turtles, beetles, and birds. Slugs also eat dead animal material and sometimes worms and snails. They make a slimy fluid that helps the foot glide. Snails and slugs move by gliding on a foot. Both snails and slugs have two long tentacles sticking out from the head. Snails can make their shells bigger as they grow. The shell protects the snail from heat and enemies. Most snails and slugs are small and drab. Some snails and slugs spend the winter underground. Snails and slugs are found throughout the world. Sleep variability was also associated with increased daily insulin requirement, suggesting more insulin resistance in these individuals. In our study of 41 working-age adults with T1D, those with SD of sleep duration > 1 h had significantly higher A1C than those with SD sleep duration ≤ 1 h (median 7.2% vs. Sleep variability (SD of sleep duration as objectively measured by actigraphy) explained 8.2% to 15.8% of the variance in glycemic control. Supporting this hypothesis, recent studies have reported that sleep variability is an independent predictor of glycemic control in T1D. Thus, sleep variability could be detrimental to glycemic control. The circadian system plays an important role in glucose metabolism, and experimental circadian misalignment results in impaired glucose tolerance. Up to 73% of adults with T1D have sleep variability (> 1 h). ![]() In addition to insufficient sleep, sleep variability (a potential marker of circadian misalignment) can impact glycemic control. Up to 40% of adults with T1D had insufficient sleep (sleep duration 6 h had 0.24% lower A1C levels than those sleeping ≤ 6 h. Negative health consequences of insufficient and irregular sleep may be amplified for persons with type 1 diabetes (T1D), who must cope with the added burden of managing a chronic condition. Work commitments, family and social obligations, and general stress have also been linked with poor sleep. Each hour of increased sleep variability, as measured by standard deviation (SD) of sleep duration, was associated with a 27% higher odds of metabolic syndrome in a multi-ethnic population. Sleep times of less than 5 h have been associated with up to four times the mortality risk of those with greater than 5 h. These include changes in appetite and eating patterns, obesity, insulin resistance, increased systemic inflammation, metabolic syndrome, dysglycemia, risk for incident diabetes, depression, and a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease. Sleep variability and insufficient sleep duration have negative health consequences in the general population. Trial registrationĬlinical Trial Registration: NCT04506151. DiscussionĪ better understanding of strategies to improve sleep in persons with T1D has the potential to be an important component of diabetes. Baseline measures will be repeated at midpoint, program completion, and post-program (weeks 6, 12, and 24, respectively) to determine differences between the two groups and sustainability of the intervention. The attention control group will participate in a healthy living information program. Our behavioral intervention employs four elements: a wearable sleep tracker, didactic content, an interactive smartphone application, and brief telephone counseling. Sleep-Opt is a technology-assisted behavioral sleep intervention that we recently developed that leverages the rapidly increasing public interest in sleep tracking. ![]() A 1-week run-in period is planned, with baseline measures of sleep by actigraphy (sleep variability and duration), glycemia (A1C and related glycemic measures: glycemic variability and TIR using continuous glucose monitoring), and other secondary outcomes: diabetes distress, self-management behaviors, quality of life, and additional patient-reported outcomes. Eligible subjects will be randomized to the Sleep-Opt intervention group or healthy living attention control group for 12 weeks. Participants will be screened for habitual sleep variability (> 1 h/week) or insufficient sleep duration (< 6.5 h per night). MethodsĪ randomized controlled parallel-arm study will be employed in 120 adults (aged 18 to 65 years) with T1D. The purpose of this study is to determine the efficacy of a T1D-specific sleep optimization intervention (Sleep-Opt) on the primary outcomes of sleep variability, sleep duration, and glycemic control (A1C) other glycemic parameters (glycemic variability, time-in-range ) diabetes distress self-management behaviors quality of life and other patient-reported outcomes in adults with T1D and habitual increased sleep variability or short sleep duration. A significant gap of knowledge exists regarding interventions to improve sleep and the effects of sleep optimization on glycemic control in T1D. Diabetes distress, poor self-management behaviors, and reduced quality of life have also been linked to sleep variability and insufficient sleep duration. Sleep is increasingly recognized as a potentially modifiable target for improving glycemic control. Despite improvements in treatment regimens and technology, less than 20% of adults with type 1 diabetes (T1D) achieve glycemic targets. It is an amazing geological formation surrounded by beautiful trees and birds. Hamilton Pool is formed by a collapsed grotto. But given the recent rains, the water quality had temporarily degraded and no swimming was allowed, which cut down on the crowds a great deal. As expected, there were more people around the pool's perimeter, after all, this is what most people come for. The turnaround point at the river features a bench in the shade for some rest or quiet contemplation.ĭoubling back, I headed to Hamilton Pool itself. Paradoxically, some of the steeper sections of the trail occur right before it reaches the Pedernales River. One spot along this section is quite narrow and requires a sideways shuffle. The trail loops completely around the overhang of the grotto. All told there is about 400 feet of elevation gain on the trails. Although the trail descends toward the river, it undulates as it heads towards the mouth of the creek. The trail surface is packed dirt and rock. The cooler air and water source provide a humid atmosphere that is perfect for Cypress and ferns that line the banks of Hamilton Creek. Since the stream bed is well sheltered in the canyon, the air here is cooler than just a few hundred feet away at the top of the canyon rim. The trail heads northwest and parallels Hamilton Creek as it flows towards the Pedernales River. I chose to go left first to avoid a small group that went in the opposite direction. To the left is the longer and less traveled part of the preserve. To the right lies a short quarter mile walk to Hamilton Pool. The path descends slightly towards a "T" in the trail. The trails begin at the waypoint "Trailhead" at the preserve parking area. Several spots along the trail allow for close access to the creek, like this one near a small waterfall. |
